What is Diamond 4C’s?

When you purchase a house, the common saying is ‘location, location, location’. But when you want to purchase a diamond, the saying is ‘4C, 4C, 4C’.

1. Color
GIA’s diamond color-grading system measures the degree of colorlessness. The less colour, the higher the grade. The GIA diamond color grades range from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). 

2. Cut
Cut actually refers to the diamond facets’ ability to transmit light and sparkle so intensely, not the shape (round, oval etc).

3. Clarity
Diamond clarity is the assessment of small imperfections on the surface and within the stone. However, it is important to keep in mind that diamonds are as unique as our fingerprints. Natural imperfections are inevitable.

4. Carat
A diamond’s carat is the diamond’s weight, not its size. Also, bigger doesnt necessarily mean better. In fact, a high carat diamond with a poor cut may look smaller than a diamond with a smaller carat and a very good cut.

Diamonds typically resell for 25% to 50% of the purchase price. But even less if your diamond does not come with a certificate.

White gold is commonly paired with diamond. This is because, with a yellow gold ring, the metal can tend to reflect a yellow tint onto the diamond, even if it is a colorless or nearly colorless stone. Therefore, many jewelers will use white gold as the diamond will look brighter and more colorless as a result.

White Gold Resale Value

White gold has a lower resale value than yellow gold, but why?

This is because white gold gets its distinctive “white” colour from the mixture of pure gold with alloy. The reason white gold has lower resale value than yellow gold is because alloy cost less but it also means the purity (karat) of your gold jewelry is diluted. However, the amount of alloy used does mean the item is more durable and scratch-resistant.

Resale value for jewelry will depend on the amount of pure gold in each item. Therefore jewelry with higher amount of pure gold will be sold at a higher value.  

For white gold jewelry, buy it if you love it and can afford it, but not for investment.

Types of White Gold

Most commonly you can find the karat for white gold is K18 (750) and K9 (375).

This means that only 75% for K18 and 37.5% for K9 of pure gold is used. Therefore, it is common for its purity to be lower.

Oddly enough, some watches are just like cars. Watches tend to depreciate most rapidly once they are taken from the store and sold on the secondhand market. Worn or not, once sold considered used.

What Brand of Watches Holds Value

Now, it’s really difficult to mention brands when talking about which brands and watches hold their value best because the truth is that it depends on various factors, such as model, condition, demand, etc.

Something to keep in mind is what actually affects the watch’s resale value. The answer is of course demand on the secondhand market, but also the prestige and reputation, and how people view the brand.

When buying luxury watches, it is not uncommon to find some models designed using gold, gems, or jewels. This of course adds to the cost of your watch when purchasing.However, it may come as a surprise but a stainless-steel watch can actually cost more than a full-gold one.

This is because the demand for stainless steel watches is much higher than the demand for gold or two-tone watches. Watches in steel also tend to hold their value much better than those of gold due to gold watches have a higher retail price, and the demand for them is thus not as high on the secondhand market as fewer people can afford them.

But also, because people prefer steel over gold. This also generally goes for watches with diamonds.

Other Factors

A watch’s condition that is brand new will obviously be worth more than a watch that is scratched up and worn frequently.

Age is something that also affects a watch’s value, especially if it is the age where the warranty is about to, or has just run out.  The older the watch, the more important servicing the watch becomes. If you have a 10 years old watch but have never sent it to service, this can also affect the price on the secondhand market.

Also, the box and papers are also quite important for a watch’s value. Finally, if you have adjusted the bracelet, the extra parts can also affect the resale price.

Brands that don’t hold their value as well as Rolex, such as brands like Breitling, Tag Heuer, and Oris, tend to lose between 40-50%, even up to 60-70% during this pandemic.

How much a watch can depreciate will depend on a number of things but mainly it is demand. A particular watch from a brand whose watches don’t generally hold its value may hold its value extremely well if the demand for it is there.

The 4Cs is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world. Every diamond that comes with a certificate will state the diamond’s 4C’s. But what is the 4C’s? Here is the rundown.

1. Color

Gold has a unique physical and chemical property. To the untrained eye, all types of gold look the same. So, when it comes to gold bullion or jewelry, knowledge is power! 

It is always advised to check your gold with a professional. However, there are a few easy ways to test if your expensive jewelry is made from real gold. Below are some simple tests you can do at home.

Keep in mind that these tests cannot replace the opinion of a professional, and are not designed to measure the quality or content of gold in a certain piece of jewelry. 

1. Smell test

While this test is far from being the most reliable way to tell real gold from fake gold, it’s one of the easiest and quickest to do. Just rub your hands together with your jewelry between them and take a sniff. If it does not smell like anything in particular, then your jewelry has passed the test. But if your smell any hints of metallic scent, then it’s quite likely you’re dealing with fake gold.

2. Hallmark (Stamp test)

It is mandatory for all gold items to have a hallmark or ‘stamping’ on the item. These stampings must include the items’ purity in Karats (example in the photo). Some jewelers might also include the manufacturer’s stamp on the item. On necklaces and bracelets, these jewelry hallmarks can be found on or near the clasp. For rings, these are usually found somewhere on the inside surface. However, there are exceptions for old gold or custom order jewelry. It is not uncommon for these items to not have stamping.

3. Magnet test

To test if your jewelry is plated or not, simply touch it with the magnet. Pure gold will not be attracted to the magnet. If the jewelry gets attracted to the magnet (even if just a little), then at least part of it is not gold. Gold chains and some bracelets commonly have a “clasp” lock, and you may find that only the clasp bit sticks to the magnet. This is because there is a spring inside the clasp mechanism as gold does not make good springs.
