The International Watch Company (IWC), a watch manufacture in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, was founded in 1868 by American entrepreneur Florentine Ariosto Jones.

Jones believed that by combining the "American manufacturing system" and "traditional Swiss craftsmanship" in a rational production system, he could mass produce high quality watches.

His aim was to produce high-quality pocket watches for the American market.

From his management over Johannes Rauschenbach Schenck, he succeeded in a technical innovation that gave birth to the world's first pocket watch (Pallweber system) in his workshop in Schaffhausen.

After Rauschenbach's death and the transfer of management to Ernst Jakob Homberger, technical innovations were quickly introduced, including IWC's first "Special Pilot's Watch" with a rotating bezel with an arrow marker to record the take-off time.

Next came the "Portuguese," a large, high-precision wristwatch using a pocket watch movement.　

In chronological order, the Portuguese and Pilot's Watch in the 1930s, the Ingenieur in the 1950s, the Aquatimer and Da Vinci in the 1960s, and　Portofino in the 1980s, and six models have been developed so far, there are also different models with the same name in the present day.

Furthermore, IWC is able to respond quickly to and improve on the weak points of mechanical watches. Even in Japan, IWC's luxury watches have a strong fan base, and many connoisseurs prefer the written "International Watch Company" name on the dial instead of the current "IWC".
