There should be little wear to the bag and the material should be sturdy. Coach products are made from expensive and authentic materials. For example, they use real, high-quality leather. At Hermès, a letter stands for the year of production. For example: “A” means it was made in 2017, “M” means it was made in 2009, etc.  Birkins made from 1997 onward put that letter inside a square.
