Diamond is solid form of the element carbon with its atoms arranged in a crystal structure called diamond cubic. At room temperature and pressure, another solid form of carbon known as graphite is the chemically stable form, but diamond almost never converts to it. Diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any natural material, properties that are utilized in major industrial applications such as cutting and polishing tools. They are also the reason that diamond anvil cells can subject materials to pressures found deep in the Earth. (Source: Wikipedia).

The diamond buying guide will include the 4 Cs, certification and conflict-free diamonds. Diamond is being judge by the 4 fundamental criteria for its quality and value. The 4 criteria are cut, co lour, clarity and carat.

CUT

It refers to the skill with which a rough diamond has been carved and polished, as well as its overall decorative shape. Cut is the most important of the 4 Cs because the diamond light play (sparkle or glimmer) is depends on it. That is the only aspect of the diamond that relies solely on man rather than nature. Only skilled craftsman can cut and polish a rough stone into beautiful diamond. The most sparkling diamond are round cut diamond.

COLOUR

Diamond are graded by colour even the diamonds are transparent. But, very poor quality of diamond will actually look yellowish. It usually been judged on a colour scale from D to Z which means D grade is the best color (colorless) and the worst (very yellow) is Z grade.

CLARITY

In most diamonds, there are small mineral flecks or fractures that is naturally occurring marks called as inclusions. The less the inclusions, the better the clarity so it will be rarer and more expensive diamond.

CARAT

Diamonds are weight in carats. The more carats there are, the bigger the diamond. There are 100 points in each carat. So, if the diamond weighs 50 points, then it will be half a carat in size which it indicated as 0.50ct.

CERTIFIED DIAMONDS

Diamond certificate usually come from gemmological institution such as the GIA or the IGI. Diamond report adds value by confirming the 4 Cs of the diamond itself and other characteristics too.

CONFLICT-FREE DIAMOND

Make sure to buy a conflict-free diamond that are sourced ethically. It means that the diamond does not come from the black market.
