SIMPLE STEPS TO SPOT FAKE GOLD

You can learn to identify genuine gold and avoid being misled or cheated when you want to buy gold from a person even from the goldsmith shop! Protect your assets and be certain that the gold you buy is genuine as it’s claimed.
STAMPING
Most of every gold jewelry will have stamp on it at unseen place that marks the karat or purity (e.g : 999, 916, 750 etc.) This should be accompanied by manufacturer’s stamp too.
But don’t be panic if your gold jewelry don’t have both of it. Usually old gold don’t have stamping or maybe using Chinese stamping (e.g : 足金 – Zuk Gam).
Please AVOID gold jewelry stamp with GP (Gold Plated), GF (Gold Filled), HGP (High Gold Plated) , and etc.
MAGNET TEST
Gold is not magnetic. To check it, you need a strong magnet compare to average magnet. Fake gold will be attracted to the magnet.
But please keep in mind, the clasp of some jewelry may not be real gold, but the chain and charm will be. This means the clasp may be attracted to the magnet but the rest of the piece will not be. Always found this kind of clasp at White Gold jewelry.
STONE AND ACID TEST
Scratch small amount of your gold jewelry at the test stone. And place small drop of liquid Nitric Acid at the spot. If the spot is melting or vanished, it is not real gold. If the spot unaffected, you have real gold.
FLOAT AND RUST TEST
Drop your gold into a cup of water. Real gold is heavy and will sink. Fake gold will float. Real gold will not rust.

SKIN TEST
If your skin experiences discoloration while wearing gold jewelry, it is not real gold. Watch for black or green discoloration for fake gold.
